Going Back To Back To Prohibiton

I am so excited to share an amazing event I designed for a local Tucson company. They celebrated their holiday party in January. What a great time to have a part — after the holidays, the rush is over!  The client chose the theme “Roaring ‘20’s & Gangster Party”.

To get you in the mood, imagine a time when alcohol wasn’t legal and prohibition was in force.  It was a time in United States history in which the manufacture, sale, and transportation of intoxicating liquors was outlawed. It was a time characterized by speakeasies, glamor, flappers and gangsters. A period of time in which even the average citizen broke the law just to get their “hooch”.

Hotel Congress in downtown Tucson was the perfect location. As you enter the hotel, you are truly transported back to  prohibition time. All the beautifully carved wood, real room keys, frosted glass door & an old fashioned telephone system (that they still use) served as the perfect backdrop for this totally awesome and out of the box party. Not to mention that John Dillinger was there! This hotel had everything from the historical ambience to an fun, friendly & helpful staff – they are great!

Along with the perfect venue, came guests outfitted in full ‘20’s and gangster costumes, ready to party like it was 1922. Walking up to the door with it’s blinds shut, guests were greeted by a gangster requesting they show their key & ticket to enter. And, if you don’t have either? Well, at the very least, you better have the password – this is a speakeasy after all — -Shhhhh. Once inside, Bubbles (the gangsters “moll”) pinned a red carnation on every gentleman & helped guests locate their place cards in the old suitcase. Moving towards the bar, Mollee the beautiful cigarette girl, offers guests bubble gum cigarettes, matchbook mints & foil wrapped chocolate cigars.

Guests step up to the aged hardwood carved bar anxious to taste the evening’s signature drink, “Absenth of Mind”.  Hmm, wonder what the ingreadients are?? After a little creative mixing, the bartender pours their drink in the Roaring ‘20’s Ice luge. As the colorful liquid streams through the cool etched ice guests hold their glasses at the bottom in anticipation of their first taste — Ahhhhh. Champagne & other libations were served as guests savored a cocktail hour filled with appetizers & the beautiful sounds of a jazz musician playing in the smoke filled casino.

Guest tables with waving tall black & white feather centerpieces encircled with glowing votive candles, white boas, & a ganster hat invited guests to their seat. A plated dinner was served allowing guests to relax, visit & chat. During dinner, Bubbles & the gangster, offered each woman a long stem red rose to compliment their partners red carnation. As dinner came to an end, a buffet filled with 1920’s candies, gave guests a sweet treat boost needed before testing their skills at the casino. Stepping through the hanging glass crystals, the smoke & jazz filled room becomes a bustling casino complete with roaming magician, a trickster, slot machines, a poker & roulette table. The movie “Harlem Nights and “The Great Gatsby” ran through out the evening while guests enjoyed dancing, celebrating, gambling & prizes! As this party came to a close, all the gangsters & flappers moved into the hotel bar to complete the evening’s festivities. Smiling faces & multiple guests accolades – what more could a planner ask for! An end to the perfect stress free evening. Check out more photos in our gallery
